| The Editorial Board of The Philosophical Quarterly invites
submission for the 1999 International Essay Prize. The prize is worth 1500 USDollars or
1000 UKPounds. Essays should not be longer than 8,000 words; they should be typed in
double spacing and conform to the usual stylistic requirements with footnotes gathered at
the end of the paper. Two copies of each essay are required. All entries will be regarded
as submissions for publication in *The Philosophical Quarterly* and both winning and
non-winning entries judged to be of sufficient quality will be published. The topic for the 1999 competition is 'Mental Illness'. Essays should take the form of a philosophical discussion of any aspect of this concept. For instance, they may consider what might be meant by the term 'mental disorder' and in what ways, if any, it is related to the term 'illness'; or the relation between brain disease and mental disorder, perhaps as a special case of body-mind relations; or the sense in which mental illness can function as a legitimate legal or moral excuse; or the ethical issues surrounding involuntary hospitalisation and treatment of mentally ill people. But other topics falling under the broad heading will also be acceptable. The emphasis should be on the wider philosophical implications of the concept of mental illness. |
