| "Several philosophical ethicists have recently called
into question the enlightenment's quest for ethics without religion - its 'flight from
(religious) authority.' For this reason it is no overstatement to claim that a
revolution has taken place in ethics within the past half generation." George F.R.
Ellis and Nancey Murphy (1996) This interdisciplinary conference invites a dialogue between theologians, scientists, philosophers and other disciplines on the issue of "ethics without religion." If a revolution has taken place in ethical thinking, what are the implications for our understanding of humanity's place in the cosmos as we enter the new millennium? George F.R. Ellis of the University of Capetown, South Africa, will be discussing some of the above issues in his opening address as keynote speaker on Thursday, January 20, 2000. His paper is entitled, "Intimations of Transcendence: The cosmos and the underlying order." We welcome papers from a broad range of viewpoints, from traditional ethicists to proponents of the radical materialist evolutionary ethics of the socio-biologists. |
